Welcome to the '''Koen Family Research Log'''.

This is the working reference for Koen family genealogy: verified findings about ancestors, surnames, places, and the sources behind them.

== Browse ==
* '''[[:Category:Surnames|Surnames]]''' — family name lines and their origins
* '''[[:Category:People|People]]''' — ancestor profiles (deceased individuals)
* '''[[:Category:Places|Places]]''' — towns, parishes, and localities tied to the family
* '''[[:Category:Documents|Documents]]''' — cited records and sources
* '''[[:Category:Census|Census collections]]''' — federal census guides and citation tools

Use this template for a specific census item, not merely to cite a census year. Supply the image-level details available from the record. Do not use an index entry as though it were an image; identify derivative-only evidence in the `note` field.

Minimum recommended fields are `year`, `jurisdiction`, `schedule`, `page` or `sheet`, `repository`, and `accessed`. Fields vary by year and provider, so all parameters are optional.

1950 Census

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create 1950 census collection page (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''The 1950 United States census''' is the seventeenth decennial federal population census and is currently the most recent publicly released individual federal census.

== Coverage notes ==

The 1950 census was released on 1 April 2022 under the 72-year access restriction. NARA provides free online access through [https://1950census.archives.gov/ 1950Census.Archives.gov] to the population schedules for U.S. states and territories, enumeration-district maps, and enumeration-district descriptions. [https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1950 NARA 1950 Census Records]

The dedicated NARA site is the primary access point for this collection. Capture the state or territory, county, locality, enumeration district, page or sheet, line, household details, image URL when available, and access date.

== Citation ==

Use [[Template:Cite census|<nowiki>{{Cite census}}</nowiki>]]. See [[Census Citation Guide]].

1940 Census

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create 1940 census collection page (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''The 1940 United States census''' is the sixteenth decennial federal population census. This page is a collection guide, not evidence for any individual until a specific schedule image and citation have been examined.

== Coverage notes ==

The 1940 population schedules are publicly available through NARA and digitization partners. The population schedules are the relevant publicly released individual census schedules for ordinary household research. Housing and agriculture schedules were taken but later destroyed and were not microfilmed for eventual public release. [https://www.census.gov/about/history/census-records-family-history/census-records.html U.S. Census Bureau, Public Census Records]

Record the exact jurisdiction, county, locality, enumeration district, page or sheet, line, and household details. Treat indexes and transcriptions as derivative aids.

== Citation ==

Use [[Template:Cite census|<nowiki>{{Cite census}}</nowiki>]]. See [[Census Citation Guide]].

1930 Census

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create 1930 census collection page (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''The 1930 United States census''' is the fifteenth decennial federal population census. This page is a collection guide, not evidence for any individual until a specific schedule image and citation have been examined.

== Coverage notes ==

The 1930 population schedules are reproduced by NARA as Microfilm Publication T626, consisting of 2,667 rolls. NARA also identifies M1931, a seven-roll index to selected city streets and enumeration districts covering more than fifty cities. The missing roll number 1602 is a known feature of the series; rolls 1601 and 1603 include Queens, New York. [https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1930/general-faqs.html NARA 1930 Census FAQs]

Index and locator tools are derivative aids. Verify the household against the schedule image and capture the exact enumeration district, page or sheet, line, and household details.

== Citation ==

Use [[Template:Cite census|<nowiki>{{Cite census}}</nowiki>]]. See [[Census Citation Guide]].

1920 Census

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create 1920 census collection page (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''The 1920 United States census''' is the fourteenth decennial federal population census. This page is a collection guide, not evidence for any individual until a specific schedule image and citation have been examined.

== Coverage notes ==

The federal population schedules are publicly available through NARA and digitization partners. Coverage and indexing should be checked at the jurisdiction, county, locality, and enumeration-district level. A database search result is not equivalent to examining the schedule image.

== Record identification ==

Record the jurisdiction, county, locality, enumeration district, page or sheet, line, dwelling, family or household number, repository, NARA publication or roll, provider, URL, and access date when available.

== Citation ==

Use [[Template:Cite census|<nowiki>{{Cite census}}</nowiki>]]. See [[Census Citation Guide]].

Census Citation Guide

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create census citation and coverage guidance (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''Census citations''' should identify the exact record examined, not just the census year or a database name.

== Evidence hierarchy ==

# A digital image of the original census schedule is preferred.
# A provider's image viewer and metadata are useful access tools, but the underlying record is the census schedule held by the repository.
# An index or transcription is derivative evidence. Cite it as such when no image is available; do not silently treat it as an image.
# A family tree assertion or search hint is a lead, not a census citation.

== Required identification ==

Capture as many of these as the record provides:

* Census year
* Jurisdiction, county, and locality
* Schedule type
* Enumeration district
* Page and/or sheet
* Line
* Dwelling and family/household number
* Repository and NARA publication or roll
* Digital provider and collection title
* Stable URL
* Date accessed
* Any coverage, image, indexing, or access limitation

== Template ==

Use [[Template:Cite census|<nowiki>{{Cite census}}</nowiki>]]:

<pre>
{{Cite census
| year = 1940
| jurisdiction = Missouri
| county = St. Louis County
| locality = ...
| schedule = Population
| enumeration_district = ...
| page = ...
| sheet = ...
| line = ...
| household = ...
| repository = National Archives and Records Administration
| publication = T627
| roll = ...
| provider = FamilySearch
| collection = 1940 United States Federal Census
| url = ...
| accessed = YYYY-MM-DD
| note = ...
}}
</pre>

== Coverage and negative findings ==

A collection page describes the record set. A research log records whether a particular person, household, jurisdiction, or enumeration district was searched. A negative finding should state the search scope, provider or repository, date, and result. “Not found” without a defined search is not a useful negative finding.

United States Census

2026-08-27T19:34:44Z

Admin: Create focused census collection index for Koen research (via create-page on MediaWiki MCP Server)

'''United States Census''' is a source-collection index for the Koen Family Research Log. It does not reproduce the broad instructional material maintained by the [https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/United_States_Census FamilySearch Research Wiki]. It records the collection structure, access boundaries, coverage warnings, and citation conventions used here.

== Scope ==

This local reference currently covers the federal population censuses from '''1920 through 1950''', the years most relevant to the current Koen research. The grandparents' generation was born in 1916 and later, so earlier census years are deferred until research requires them.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the custodian of the publicly released individual federal census records. NARA currently makes individual census records available from 1790 through 1950; this wiki intentionally documents only the 1920–1950 subset for now.

== Collection index ==

{| class="wikitable"
! Census !! Status !! Primary access point !! Local page

| 1920 || Publicly available || NARA and digitization partners || [[1920 Census]]

|-
| 1950 || Publicly available; released 1 April 2022 || [https://1950census.archives.gov/ NARA 1950 Census] || [[1950 Census]]
|}

== How to use this index ==

# Use the relevant year page to understand the record set, geography, and known limitations.
# Locate and inspect the image whenever possible; an index entry alone is derivative evidence.
# Cite the specific schedule, jurisdiction, enumeration district, page or sheet, line, household, repository, publication or roll, provider, URL, and access date.
# Use [[Template:Cite census|Cite census]] for a consistent citation.
# Record person-specific searches, negative findings, and unresolved identity questions in the Obsidian research log or the private Research namespace—not on these general collection pages.
